Press-Information II for Power of Research
Vienna, 27th May 2010
Headline: Teaser-Game from "Power of Research" is now online
Sub heading: Coming this autumn - from biolution and TPM games - the first ever scientifically focussed strategic browser game will be launched
The countdown has started for a free browser game "Power of Research" - to be released in autumn of this year - with the launch of a teaser at www.powerofresearch.eu. Both companies based in Vienna, biolution and TPM Games, bring together for the first time ever concepts of current biomedical research in a strategic browser game - entertaining, exciting, and understandable. "With the Power of Research, we will allow players to virtually slip into the role of scientists and experience everyday real research", explains initiator and coordinator of the game Dr. Iris Grünert, managing director of the science communication agency biolution.
The decisive game elements are communication, collaboration and competition: players can compete against each other in real time or collaborate, virtually in life science research, publish and patent their research results, participate in conferences, build a research infrastructure or request funding. The inclusion of up to date scientific topics connects it to the real world - popular science events, research institutes, universities and real information are used when exploring the game content.
This is as a result of "two years of hard development, relating to the difficult issue of making science attractive for a demanding international games community" states the games developer and manager of TPM games Tim Preuster. To achieve this TPM Games has applied the newest, dynamic technology for example integration of the self developed "soft body physics engine". This teaser game should create a first impression for future players.
This is a mixture of strategic and pace game skills. Players have to combat a bacterial infection with white blood cells (specifically: lymphocytes) using the different tools available: examination of bacteria under the microscope, choosing various chemicals to attract them or staining the bacteria to differentiate them. The use of these methods must be considered carefully because the bacteria multiply and change while time and resources are limited. Only those who use the correct lymphocytes and quickly defeat the bacteria can achieve a high score.
Ten levels and an endless mode provide different levels of difficulty.
With the teaser game an overview of the game in general is given along with a first trailer on the website. Regarding the launch in autumn 2010 new information will be provided online.
"Science is complex and occurs within an extremely competitive international environment. Power of Research should bring young people from all over Europe closer together with a completely new concept and enthusiasm for research - especially for those who have little interest in such complex issues," stresses Grünert.
